Maleficent is a major antagonist in Kingdom Hearts: Shadows of Eternity, playing a more behind the scenes role than Cleo. She retains her same appearance and demeanor as displayed in Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep.

Maleficent possess fair, green skin, and her shining, yellow eyes are heavily shadowed with violet make-up as opposed to her lips, which are painted red. Her head is topped with a black-horned headdress and she wears a long, tattered black robe with a purple trim and maroon flare edges. These and other physical details, like the fin-like spikes on the sides of her neck, hint towards her dragon-transformation powers. The spikes along with the collar of her robe loosely create the image of a pentagram. She carries a staff with a glowing green orb at the tip through which she casts her spells. In Kingdom Hearts: Shadows of Eternity, Maleficent wears her golden ring with a circular black stone in it. This was in her original design in Sleeping Beauty, but was absent from Kingdom Hearts.

Maleficent first shows up near the very beginning in both Anthony and Lily's storylines in Spellbound Ascension where she tells Lily how to strip the darkness from Anthony's heart, saving him from becoming a Heartless, but also creating Cleo. Not much is heard of her again until her final appearance in her homeworld, Enchanted Dominion. There, she begins to wreak havoc as her plan to harvest the darkness of Cleo's shadowy heart comes to fruition. However, she is defeated on two separate occasions while helping Cleo, and is finally forced to leave her host. However, she vows to return again, and no one doubts she'll make good on her word.

Early screenshots for Shadows of Eternity showed Cleo as a playable character, and two screenshots in particular showed her using a D-Link with Maleficent. She apparently gave the player access to a variety of Darkness-based and Fire-based commands.
