Captain Marvelous / Gokai Red is the Red Ranger and leader of Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger. The unbelievably dashing rogue gathered four others like himself to become the Gokaigers and begin their search for the greatest treasure in the universe. Though they aren't earthlings and Marvelous originally didn't consider protecting the earth to be his job, he and his crew nonetheless managed to defeat Ackdos Gill’s empire and save the planet.

Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger VS Yudoku Sentai Sokaiger[2][]

In late 2021 to mid 2022, after the incident with the Bakut Pirates, Marvelous had the destroyed Gokai Galleon sent to a repair shop to be rebuilt[3]. When he first hears about the Sokaigers from Kou, Marv decides it's time to go back for the Second Greatest Treasure in the Universe. On the Zangyack's home planet, the Gokaigers meet the Sokaigers and Marvelous would fight against Jack, a vulgar, cheating, arrogant outlaw who mocks him for aligning his interests and values with the Super Sentai due to the Gokais' time on Earth.

Despite his best efforts, Marvelous lost to Jack, and with the other Gokaigers rounded up, Sokaizer intended to kill Gai first specifically to emotionally break Marvelous, but Gai resisted. Marvelous' retort that at least he still has the loyalty of his crew and cares for them as any captain should prompts a ranting Jack to use the drill tip to try to poke his uncovered eye out(not knowing both his eyes are just fine). After Misakii is attacked by Blaxon for trying to save Marv, Jack opts to have his rival die along with the Gokai Galleon, but fortunately this plan is immediately thwarted by Blaxon, and seeing their captain's true identity as Jacktos Gill causes the Sokaigers to rebel after Blaxon is killed for giving the SGT to the Gokaigers.

Marvelous is freed and leads his crewmates, including the newly inducted Misakii, Bongar, Kaprimarah and Ayane in fighting Jacktos and destroying his Sokai Tomahawk, but Jacktos retaliates with SokaiOh, prompting Marvelous to consider ramming the Gokai Galleon into the evil robot. Misakii protests the idea of Marvelous sacrificing himself and convinces the Gokaigers to instead use the SGT's power to restore their ship's ability to become GokaiOh.

After Jacktos Gill is destroyed, the Gokaigers, Ban, and Kou give Blaxon a proper burial on Karrishu before Marvelous, Joe, Don, Luka, Ahim and Gai bid farewell to Misakii, Kaprimarah, Bongar and Ayane with the promise that they will always be welcome back on Karrishu.

Marvel VS Super Sentai

In 2023, Marvelous and his crew capture a time-hopping Loki while the Shin Avengers are seeking the Super Sentai's help to fight the Stark Administration, and they save Gai from Lord Drakkon before letting the Shin Avengers aboard the Gokai Galleon. After Shin convinces Loki to help, the Gokais and Shin Avengers destroy the Iron Man Mk. 13 and help Gai get his powers back from Drakkon[4].

In April 2024, Marvelous and his crew join the Avengers Sentai Alliance in the Battle of Starktopia 01, fighting alongside Rocket Raccoon, Carol Danvers and Peter Quill, and the Gokaigers return to the Tokuverse with the rest of the Super Sentai after they win[5]. Shin Seigi also gifted Marvelous and his team with a homemade Shin Captain America Ranger Key before they went back home, as a symbol of their bonds and what they accomplished together with the Alliance.

Personality[]

A wild, dashing rogue, Marvelous isn't afraid to take risks or show off in battle. He used to not see much worth in protecting the Earth, but he and his crew's time there, especially after letting Gai Ikari on the team, changed that for the better. For example, he was genuinely disturbed by Blaxon's refusal to listen to Misakii, and seemed to have no doubts about Gai getting through to her, which he did so easily. Seeing Misakii try to risk her life to stand up for him and his crew was all it took for Marvelous to acknowledge the girl as an honorary Gokaiger and a friend, so when he was about to decide on sacrificing himself in a kamikaze attack against SokaiOh[6], he instead accepts Misakii's suggestion of using the Second Greatest Treasure for the greater good. He also forgave the other former Sokaigers in light of their role in defeating the last remnant of Zangyack's wicked empire.

His morality is probably best described as a puzzle, but he is by far a better person compared to his rivals Basco ta Jolokia and Jack of the Sokaigers, and more recently his and Shin’s mutual enemy Lord Stark. Marvelous struggled to keep his cool when it briefly appeared that Gai was killed in GoZyuJin’s destruction, and his relief at Gai’s survival shows how close to his crew he has become, and how much they’ve come to value protecting Earth, even if it’s technically not the one they first came to.

Although Pepper Potts was taught to regard all pirates as inherently evil, Marvelous tries to tolerate her for his fan Shin’s sake, who leans on seeing the good in both of them. Even when Pepper ruthlessly attacked him and the Alliance out of anger at not being allowed to save her husband from Shin’s wrath, Marvelous held no ill will towards Ironheart Rescue, as further shown by attending her obituary and accepting Shin’s apology for her rash behavior.[5]

Trivia[]

  • Marvelous' involvement in Marvel VS Super Sentai was planned before the announcement of Kaizoku Sentai: Ten Gokaiger, so his eyepatch is a late addition to the former, even with no mention of how he got it, or the fact that both his eyes are still fine.
  • Spider Man jokingly calls Marvelous “Jack Sparrow”, even if he doesn’t appreciate it(likely due to his experience with Sokaizer) or understand the similarities. He does however come prefer that nickname over “Shazam”.
  • Shin also uses Marvelous' catchphrase in the original Japanese(English voice track) and in English(Japanese voice track).
  • Gai complimenting Misakii for her willingness to sacrifice her wish for the Second Greatest Treasure calls back to when Marvelous similarly praises Gai for destroying the First Greatest Treasure in Gokaiger’s penultimate episode.[7]
  • Pepper Potts is the first character(and only hero) to shatter Marvelous’ helmet visor.[5]
  • GokaiWhite met Ryota Ozawa and Toshihide Wakamatsu(Gai Yuki) at Power Morphicon 2022 on August 27.

  3. It was originally assumed that the Gokai Galleon Key was expended to rebuild it, but to avoid contradicting the Key’s recent appearance in BoonBoomger ep. 43, it is retconned that the Galleon was rebuilt with a lesser power core, and presumably lower-grade materials to further explain how it was rebuilt so unusually quickly.
